Men’s finals in Sáo Paulo yesterday was off the charts. With an amazingly loud and supportive crowd that only Brazil can produce and broadcasting live on national tv, the energy in the park was palpable. Everyone that skated seemed to have the volume cranked up a notch, skating with power and speed that was just shy of being out of control. Crowd favorite Pedro Barros had a scary slam while soaring an insane 540 on the big wall and while he skated the rest of his runs, he never fully recovered. Third place went to Brazil’s Pedro Quintas, who consistently flew around the park with unique style and power. Also hailing from Brazil was extreme ball of energy Luiz Francisco. He fired off trick after trick at speeds that were nothing short of amazing. His frontside boneless on the bank was as high and stretched out as we’ve ever seen. Think Spud Webb winning a dunk contest (for those of you that follow NBA basketball and are old.) Top spot went to the United State’s Heimana Reynolds. Consistency, flow, power and his unique take on the park were unbeatable. His Madona’s were so high and stretch out that they pushed the boundaries of possibility and were just this side of makeable. Everyone in the finals skated at an incredibly high level and should be applauded, a fall here or there and everything changes. Extremely enjoyable to watch them push it as hard as they could. What really showed through all week and especially through the finals was how tight this community is. Everyone had genuine high fives and hugs and shouts of support for each other. Combined with the energy of the Brazilian crowd, they were able to push themselves into incredible finals performances. A huge thank-you and congratulations are in order for all the skateboarders, staff and people behind the scenes that put this event together. Job well done.
