The Stadio Pietrangeli in the Foro Italico will host the Street Skateboarding World Championships 2021, qualifying event for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
"All roads lead to Rome" and to the next World Skate Street Skateboarding Championships. The event will take place from May 31 to June 6 in the Stadio Pietrangeli, in the Foro Italico in Rome.
We have placed our bet on the Eternal City as host of the most important Olympic qualification Street Skateboarding event for 2021. Athletes competing in it will get the chance to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games: in addition to earning useful points for the ranking that will select the 40 street skateboarders who will fly to Tokyo (20 men and 20 women), all podium spots in Rome will earn direct access to the Games.
But there’s more. The World Championships are in fact only the tip of the iceberg of a project that envisages Rome as the protagonist of the Olympic discipline for the next few years with the Open Street Skateboard, a top-level international contest organized by Sport e Salute S.p.A. in collaboration with the Italian Roller Sports Federation from 2022 to 2025.
In the historic “Centralino”, Los Angeles’ California Skateparks will build a temporary street park where the best international skaters will compete for a spot in Tokyo: Legendary skaters such as Nyjah Houston (USA), Yuto Horigome (JP), Pamela Rosa (BRA) and Leticia Bufoni (BRA).
Sabatino Aracu, president of both the Italian and International Roller Sports Federation commented: “We managed to bring to Italy the second biggest Skateboarding event in 2021 (the first one being the Olympic Games) also thanks to the collaboration of Sport e Salute that believed in this incredible project from the get-go. The Street Skateboarding World Championships, which will take place between the Tennis Internationals and the European Soccer Championships, will focus the eyes of everybody on the city of Rome between May and June. Rome will definitely be the international protagonist of the new Olympic discipline with the stages of the contest already scheduled until 2025.”
Sport e Salute President and CEO Vito Cozzoli: “Hosting more than 200 athletes from all over the world at the Parco del Foro Italico is another sign of a restart of the entire sporting movement. An event entirely dedicated to the next generation to give new life to this sport that counts on a growing community of enthusiasts and which always maintains a healthy spirit of competition and brotherhood intact.”
Ollie, flip, grind and slide. These are the most used terms in skateboarding, the names of tricks that athletes perform inside a skatepark that reproduces elements of urban architecture, which skateboarders use as obstacles. The tricks are evaluated based on their difficulty, the precision and quality of execution, the complexity of the structure on which the maneuver is performed and the style the skateboarder uses on the various obstacles.
