The second day of Alpino ended with a surprise after the Latvian Miks Zvejnieks was proclaimed this Wednesday world champion in Giant Slalom. With his gold in the circuit of Parc de Montjuïc-Passeig del Migdia, Zvejnieks has broken the full German not only in gold but also in the other positions of the podium. The winner in the female category was the German Manuela Schmohl.
Zvejnieks has surprised the German skaters and has finished the two rounds of the Giant Slalom with a time of 46,93 seconds, qualifying ahead of Moritz Doms (47,36) and Sven Ortel (47,45). With the exception of the Latvian, the first eight classified have been Germans in a test in which Doms and Ortel have added their second medals in the WRG2019 after gold and bronze on Tuesday in the Combined competition.
German hegemony has remained in the female category. Manuela Schmohl, with a time of 49,09 seconds, has obtained the gold medal in Giant Slalom, surpassing her compatriots Ann-Krystina Wanzke (49,20) and Lara Kögel (49,98) in a test where the seven first classified have been German. For Schmohl this has been his second medal in Barcelona. On Tuesday it was bronze in the Combined.
The best Spaniards in Giant Slalom this Wednesday were Ainhoa Mellado, ninth in women’s, and David Alaiz, tenth in men’s.
Tomorrow, Thursday, July 11th, will be the third day in Alpino, where the German skaters arrive with 11 medals out of 12 possible.
