“Epidemiology and prevention of accidents in Roller Sports (RS). Four years of studies and observations on accidents of Italian Federation (FIHP) skaters. Probable causes and prevention”.
These are the titles of the research conducted by Dr. Maurizio Lollobrigida and others, in collaboration with FIRS , FIHP , and the Telematic University San Raffaele in Rome.
The research was conducted in order to spread scientific thinking in the conviction that Roller Sports are safe and not high-risk sports.
Previous scientific evidences considered roller sports, in particular inline skating, sports with a high risk of injury. These considerations had negative consequences for the development of roller sports, particularly among children and adults.
The research was conducted on the data of the accidents happened to the athletes of FIHP during the four-year Olympic period 2009-2012. The result denied this scientific evidence. Prevention is of course necessary and worthy of attention. First of all it is essential to join sports club recognized by FIRS and FIHP. Optimized strategies of training are fundamental too.
The causes of accidents have been identified in factors related to training strategies and in the role of the coach: he has to find the appropriate solutions.
The research will be presented as a poster presentation during the “IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury & Illness in Sport” to be held in Monte-Carlo from 10 to 12 April 2014 and will also be published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
The data, and the conclusions by the authors will be published in order to coincide with the conference.
In Monte-Carlo a thematic poster discussion session will be organized on 12th April 2014 from 15:30 to 16:30. Poster displays will grouped according to topic, and during this hour, authors will be asked to give a 3-min oral presentation of their study, followed by Q&A.
